Hey. It’s time to update your closet.
If you spend most of your time wiping up after kids, changing diapers, living in yoga pants and sneakers, keeping your hair in a three second ponytail, then chances are you haven’t updated your closet in a hot minute.
I only know this because when I was talking to my new sister-in-law about my three year old underwear her face contorted into an expression I’ve never seen before and told me, “Oh no no. Oh sister. We’re gonna fix that. We’re gonna fix that for you.”
Between the sleepless nights, the snoring husband, the teething toddler, the homeschooled kids, the small business and life lived in and out of a hospital for pediatric cancer…I haven’t taken care of myself much.
And I know I’m not the only one because I mentioned this phenomenon of needing new underwear to a fellow mom and she confessed that her closet (*ahem* undies) are equally neglected. Like, how have we not thought to get ourselves new undergarments in the last couple years?
Well that turned it all into a deeper look at not just my unmentionables but at my closet as a whole. When I stopped working for someone else full time, started homeschooling and living at a hospital, I just let my closet go. Occasionally when I’ve needed something seasonal I hit up Amazon, the local thrift store and then caved and got something new at Target.
We moms just don’t have time to make the effort right? And if we don't’ make the effort for ourselves no one will…which we’re kind of resigned to and kind of ok with…because we haven’t even thought seriously about it.
OK. So since I had a wake up call, I’m calling out to you too. It’s time to take care of yourself. You’re a beautiful creation, holding the highest office in the land with the title of “Mother” and so it’s time for us to step into our new season of life. The one where we start wearing clothes that maybe cost a little more but will withstand the life of motherhood we live. Ones that are classics that can be spiced up with accessories or jackets or cool kicks.
I’ve curated a list of my very favorite things, closet and cosmetic.
Note to the eco-friendly reader. In searching for things that make sense for my closet, and my budget…being 100% eco-friendly just isn’t…sustainable. So the recommendations made here are meant to be practical, budget friendly, and earth friendly. But that won’t be completely mutually exclusive. Where something may not be made of 100% eco-friendly fibers or products, it’s longevity should outweigh that issue.
The Favorites
BEAUTYCOUNTER FAVORITES:
Beauty Counter has become a FAST favorite for me because their products, while not 100% eco-friendly, are all made with the highest ETHICAL expectations in the land. In fact, they are also doing the hard work of changing the beauty industry in the USA. So…they win my dollars.
Counter+ All Bright C Serum
Brighten up with this game-changing serum. This ultra-potent 10% blend of two forms of vitamin C instantly brightens skin and helps reduce the appearance of existing dark spots, while antioxidant-rich turmeric and camu camu extracts help protect against new ones. The formula also helps defend skin from the damaging effects of environmental stressors—revealing a more youthful-looking complexion.
Flawless in Five
With this customizable kit you get to pick all the things you need to get yourself feeling fresh, even when you’re completely exhausted. You can really mix and match a whole bunch of products but my most favorite is the Dew Tinted moisturizer and the All-in-One mascara. So make sure to pick those!!!! Expect this set to last you at least three months. It might go faster, but that’s because you’ll love these products so much you’ll wear them everyday.
Other Body Essentials
TARTE Tartlette Toasted Eyeshadow
This is my FAVORITE palette to combine with the new Lid Glow Creams from Beautycounter. They accent so perfectly whether you’re going for a Smokey eye look or just trying to open up your eyes into a more natural look for the day.
Bumble and Bumble Dry Shampoo
Y’all. I’ve tried All. The. Things. And this is the dry shampoo I keep coming back to. The powder fades quickly, my hair looks great, and I feel more like a human on the days I don’ thave time to take a shower. This is especially great for after a workout when you wash your bod, but not your hair. Can’t recommend this stuff enough.
CLOTHING BASICS:
Madewell Cotton Tee’s
These Tee’s are literally the most comfortable tee’s you’ll find on the market. They are high quality sourced materials that wear easily and wash out stains super easily. Plus they’re super affordable and 100% flattering.
Madewell Jeans
These Jeans are my MOST FAVORITE JEANS OF ALL TIME. I realize that’s a lot of caps but when you want your booty well accented, your mom tummy protected, your hips hugged and your thighs to not feel like their in a headlock, these are the jeans for you. I love all the cuts but I do have three pairs of the Perfect Vintage jeans in different dyes. Just. Do. it.
Target Basic Tee’s
These tee’s by A New Day are an affordable, comfy, and flattering alternative to the Madewell ones if you’re on a bit of a tighter budget. These pair so well with all the things and don’t make you look like the exhausted frumpy mom that you fee like. Grab a couple of these in exciting colors that you’d normally be too afraid to try out.
Fabletics No Bounce Sports Bra:
Made for your toughest workouts, our bounce-banishing bra is ready for impact… high impact, that is! Its high neckline reduces breast movement, extra-wide straps and a secure bottom band offer support, and back cutouts allow your skin to breathe.
Fabletics Noelle Sculpknit Bralette
Fabeltics most advanced fabric ever now comes in the cutest bralette, featuring adjustable racerback straps and a supportive band. I have this bra in black and wear it ALL. THE. TIME. Seriously. I need to get some new colors. You’ll feel equally supported and comfortable. No underwire and no ladies going a thousand directions.
Fabletics Yoga Pants
Meet the can't-live-without, curve-defining legging in our universally flattering 7/8 length. Made in Fabletics famous PowerHold® fabric, featuring InstaBoost Technology for the ultimate hold, with a high-rise waist to streamline your shape. Come cold weather, you’ll be wearing these babies every single day. Buy two pairs.
HOKEMP Soft Stretch Briefs Low Rise Lace Bikini Panties
Before you judge an Amazon purchase, these babies have been amazing. They have a cotton gusset (thats the part between your legs. Who knew?!) which is really important for healthy and are incredibly comfy. I‘d say they are true to size.
Baleen Stackable Necklaces
Every thing Baleen makes is gorgeous. But they are ALSO eco-friendly! Every product is handmade from recycled materials and they are a zero-waste production. Plus all their stuff is SUPER gorgeous and high quality. Feel good, look beautiful. Bam!
